For collectors, Tommy Johnson’s reputation rests upon just six records and a handful of unissued songs released fifty years after his death. Critics have extolled him: ‘one of the pivotal figures of delta blues’; ‘one of the most influential blues artists working in the Mississippi delta’; ‘no one was more important to the development of pre-Robert Johnson delta blues than Tommy Johnson’. Johnson was an influence, both on local musicians and those that heard his records and emulated him.

Although Ishman Bracey’s modern reputation tends to be overshadowed by his partner Johnson (they would play lots of gigs together but didn’t regard themselves as a duo), his fellow musicians thought better of him. The Rev. Rubin Lacey reckoned ‘Ishmon was a really good musician. Ishmon had, I thought, a gift to sing. I mean, Ishmon was good playing the blues.…’
